First Gay Wedding Fashion Showcase A Hit!

Let me tell you something: Catalyst Ranch knows how to throw a great party!
This past weekend, I headed up to Chicago for the NuptEquality Fashion & Vendor Showcase at Catalyst Ranch. Bobbie Soeder and her team of “ranch hands” at the Ranch put on a fashion show and party, which raised funds for Lambda Legal, raised applause with the debut of a tremendous fashion show for gay wedding wear, and raised the roof for everyone who attended.
Bernadette Smith (of It’s About Time Events) and I opened the event with our pioneering gay wedding planning seminar, Gay Weddings 101, and enjoyed meeting the attending couples who were all in various stages in the planning process.
After and hour of making new friends, meeting some incredibly friendly vendors (my personal favorite being the team members from the Kimpton Hotels — one of whom made arrangements for me to enjoy the company of two goldfish in my room on my final night!), and enjoying some nosh, we headed in to grab seats around the runway to be wowed by the fashions of Elda de la Rosa and Dame Couture.
Any of you can call my mom and ask her if she would ever put money on me saying something like, ‘Oh, wow! That outfit is gorgeous!’ several times in one night and you would find a quick ‘no’ from her. Generally speaking, it would have been a good bet. But, at NuptEquality, I was floored by the incredible designs — for both men & women — and that’s about all I said for about an hour.
I left the party feeling as though I had made some great new friends and found some wonderful new gay wedding resources. My only wish: that Catalyst Ranch could duplicate itself here in the Washington, D.C. area so that I could host a party at their site. It’s a really fun, engaging, and whimsical space.
One element for which I am most grateful: the attention which Catalyst Ranch generated for the dignity and equality of same sex couples. Every little bit makes a difference and I, personally, can’t wait for their next event!
