On one hand, I heard a report earlier this week about a conservative lawmaker from Colorado who is interested in passing legislation in support of limited economic rights for same-sex adults living in the same household, and, on the other, I heard just today from someone who attended an inspiring marriage equality rally in New Jersey, where, today, the Supreme Court heard a case regarding the complaint of seven same-sex couples who say that the state violates its constitution by denying them the right to marry. A Small Step Forward For Gay Wedding-Kind In South Africa; A Giant Leap Sideways For Kathryn In Arlington County

On the same day in which South Africa becomes the fifth country to legalize gay marriage via a Supreme Court vote which found it unconstitutional to deny gay and lesbian couples the right to marry, Kathryn encounters an uncomfortable situation at the Arlington County courthouse. A giddy heterosexual couple jokingly worries about whether or not they wll be able to get a marriage license for their wedding this Saturday, while Kathryn wonders if she and her partner ever will. Add in an off-hand comment made by the desk clerk about a gay couple's chance of applying for a license and you've got a glorious eavesdropping situation on your hands.
