Which Finger for My Gay Wedding Ring?

070047 SM.jpgIt's a question I've gotten a lot. My partner and I are going to get married and we aren't sure which fingers we should put our rings on. What do you recommend?

Most succinctly put, I recommend you do what feels right!

We have seen couples choose all sorts of options for their engagement and wedding rings. Some gay couples choose to use the ring finger (next to your pinky) on the right hand for the engagement and/or wedding ring since it is similar, but not the same as the heterosexual symbol. Others, however, embrace the traditional practice of using the ring finger of the left hand (this is what my partner and I chose, for example). I have also known of folks who have used other fingers; some have chosen the same finger and other couples have each picked a finger and not matched. It really depends on what you want to do.

Some, who have chosen the right hand, have done so because they feel they have a bit more privacy. I have seen this most for folks who work for the military or in schools. Others have done so for political reasons. Those who have chosen the left hand, have often wanted to make a statement that they see their relationship as equal to a heterosexual relationship and want to be clear with that statement.

Increasingly (and this is either my Dallas upbringing or my age speaking!), I say: get some bling for that ring!

Have you seen our selection? Check it out!
