Gretchen Attends PLAG/DC Gala and Proclaims: PFLAG is just the BEST!!!!

Gretchen-Hamm.jpgI am all dressed up and going to a big gala. Haven't we all been ready to go to one of these and felt like we want to go but don't want to at the same time? In the end, they are always nice events and help our favorite school, charity or political cause; but this one, PFLAG DC's annual Dinner Event, has become one of my favorites!

I attend the event because I've been a long-time member of the Dallas chapter and because my company, GayWeddings.com, sponsored and donated a Starter Gay Wedding Package worth $6500 to PFLAG DC's online and silent auctions. We are thrilled to have raised the most money with a single donated package this year, offering a wonderful wedding package to two lucky grooms and raising $3,651.00 for PFLAG DC. Not only that, the grooms won a video iPod, too, for being the winners of the largest package or item donated!

Thea Gill from "Queer As Folk" won the Spotlight Award. She really enjoyed herself along with the MC of the evening, Carole Simpson of ABC. Carole was quite funny and down to earth. She was certainly in sync with the wonderful energy in the room all evening.

My escort and I had the pleasure of being dinner companions with Jody Huckaby, the executive director of PFLAG National, and his partner. It was great to put a face with the PFLAG Weekly Alert , which I read each week.

What is it that makes this one so special for everyone who attends? It is the warm wonderful energy in the room when 800 parents, friends, family of the GLBT community and the GLBT community get together to celebrate relationships and raise money to futher PFLAG's mission. There is a lot of love and care present in the room and I get inspired every time I read their mission:

"PFLAG promotes the health and well-being of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender persons, their families and friends through: support, to cope with an adverse society; education, to enlighten an ill-informed public; and advocacy, to end discrimination and to secure equal civil rights. Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays provides opportunity for dialogue about sexual orientation and gender identity, and acts to create a society that is healthy and respectful of human diversity."
