"Feast of Life" Helps Gay Couple Celebrate 25 Years Together

We love all of the ideas that our fellow vendors and clients send in. This celebration idea comes to us from celebrant and acclaimed storyteller, Gerald Fierst:

Scott Clugstone and Wallace Norman wanted to celebrate their 25th Anniversary with a recommitment ceremony.

The last few years had been stressful for them -- with medical problems and family deaths -- but these hard times had made them more determined to celebrate the richness of their marriage and the strength it had given them in adversity.

With the help of Civil Celebrant Gerald Fierst, they created a feast of life as a background for their renewal of vows. They invited their closest friends and family to come up to their country home near Woodstock, NY (Wallace is the Artistic Director of the Woodstock Fringe Festival, a summer schedule of music and theater at the historical Byrdcliff Arts Center) for a luxurious meal. There, in front of their hearth, they remembered their lives together and recommited themselves to each other for the rest of their lives.

Fierst created a tasting ceremony featuring bitter, salt, sour, savory and sweet. Each flavor was used to inspire a story of Scott and Wallace's relationship, culminating in a wine sharing between the two lovers in which their union was blessed and celebrated. The assembled guests were also invited to taste a bit of chocolate to share the sweetness of this moment.

Editor's Note: Fierst is certified by the Celebrant USA Foundation which trains officiants to create personalized life ceremonies.
